A couple of weeks ago, I was visiting a good friend at his apartment. I have been trying to bring him to Christ for a couple years, and he still seems fairly open to the gospel. A friend of his was also visiting. We began to discuss religion, and I soon found out that my friend's friend was a Catholic. He was certainly not a strong Catholic. He told me that "all paths lead to God," and that even Adolf Hitler probably had some good left in him. I don't know how many times I have been confronted with these postmodern ideas. Why is it that so many people believe everything in general, and nothing in particular? He tried to tell me that Jesus was very tolerant of different religious faiths. I was very patient with him, and I always take people seriously when they want to talk about the things of God. I realized that he was speaking from his heart, and I respected what he had to say. I did try to show him briefly, however, that Jesus was not a postmodernist:
Matthew 7:13-14
"Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it."
John 14:6
"...I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me."
John 3:18
"He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God."
Jesus clearly taught in many places that he was the only way of salvation.
It amazes me how that people would rather believe in nothing than to at least seek for the truth and try to find it.
Our society is immersed in the philosophy of postmodernism. It is everywhere from Sesame Street and our public education to the university setting and the workplace.
Also, postmodernism has infected a lot of churches. While I realize that there are saved people among most denominations, I am not a Baptist out of convenience. I am a Baptist (and more specifically an Old-Time Baptist) because I hold to certain doctrinal beliefs that I believe are necessary.
Even when I talk to fundamentalists and evangelicals, I often hear the statement, "Join the church of your choice," or "It doesn't matter what kind of church you join." I think it does matter what kind of church you join. If your church decieves lost people by telling them to sign a card in order to be saved, you should look for something better. It is a sin to deceive lost souls into trusting a card instead of Jesus Christ. My experience has been that most congregations are severely flawed in their methods of evangelism. I also believe that only people who have a testimony of an experience of salvation through Christ should be church members. These are just a couple of examples.
I am afraid that this postmodern ideology is deceiving people to eternal Hell. Also, I believe that it takes the joy out of living a full Christian life. How can a Christian who believes in almost nothing except the basic plan of salvation find fulfillment in life? I know that I don't have all the answers, and there are many mysteries in life that cannot be answered by man. Still, God put his love in my heart, and it would be wrong for me not to express what truth he has revealed to me.
The prophets of old, Jesus Christ and the apostles preached the truth regardless of how often people rejected them. When and where God has revealed us the truth, let us stand up for him no matter how unpopular we become with the world.
