"Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God." James 4:4
Satan knows that the easiest way of hindering the cause of Christ is to get Christians to love the world more than God. As Christians, we have a message that should be professed and proclaimed by all of us. We have a duty and responsibility to be servants of God. Unfortunately, Satan uses the pleasures of this world to lure us away from our godly duties.
When we emphasize worldly pleasure above serving God, we are in part rejecting Christ, and also helping to doom lost souls to eternal Hell.
Worldly pleasures that hinder the cause of Christ do not have to be blatant sins like adultery, murder, or stealing. Whenever we care more about enjoying the pleasures of the world than serving God, we sin.
For example:
Education is wonderful. Still, if we care more about the delights of a worldly education than the solid truth of Christ, we sin.
Fishing, hunting, and golf are fine in their place. Everyone needs time to escape the pressures of daily life. Unfortunately, some people think that these things are more important than going to church on Sunday.
It is okay to enjoy watching or playing sports. There is nothing inherently evil about enjoying University of Kentucky basketball or rooting for the Los Angeles Lakers or Cincinnati Reds. There is nothing wrong with playing basketball, baseball, soccer, or hockey. Let us never forget that some things (like worshipping God on Sunday) are far more important.
Eating a delicious meal is fine. Never let it lead to gluttony.
Video games can be fun. I personally like almost all of the Mario Brothers games. Unfortunately, too many people spend more time playing "Final Fantasy X" than reading the Bible or praying.
Keeping up with politics has its place. The United States always needs more educated and concerned voters. We should still understand that worldly governments will always fail. Regardless of which candidate you support, he will fail. If you want to support someone -- support Jesus Christ. He has never sinned, and stands ready to forgive all sinners who meet his conditions.
Talking with friends can be fun, but always remember that gossip is a sin.
MTV…. Well…. Hmmm…. MTV is a sin. Some things like idolatry and murder cannot be done in moderation, because they are always wrong. MTV is in the same category. Never watch it. MTV is a sin.
Brothers and Sisters in Christ --
Shall we care more about the world than God? We are mere pilgrims and travelers in this wicked world of sin. Our main goal in life is to do God's will and bring the lost to Christ. We should all examine our priorities and pray to God for wisdom. When you do find problems in your life, you should repent to God and change your lifestyle.
